History of Marble Inlay Art
In the workshop of Florence in Italy around the end of the 16th century began work on intricate precious stones. It was known as the pitro dura. (Pierre = Stone, Dura = Difficult) The Italians had made a classic artistic form and organized monopoly on it. Since 1630, the Pietra Dura walkable, small objects appeared in the form of decorative panels, in which the birds and flowers are suitable for cabinet fronts and top of the table. Some of these reached the Mughals as a quick gift.
In all Mughal emperors, Shah Jahan was the largest patron of architecture in India. For that, any amount of money or time was too much to create a permanent, eternal architectural beauty and was always remembered through it, it is in their buildings, which is the strength to build the relationship between Mughal art and the Pietra Dura Feels. The Tajmahal, the emperor and his wife, the main floor and the surrounding marble railing surgeons offer very close similarities in the form of Pietra Durra.
How to do Marble Inlay Art ?
Parchinkari or Marble Inlay Art is art of inlaying semi-precious stones. It start with the step involving selection of high quality marble. The marble of different kinds which is used to design a piece of this art should be white, pink ,green or black .Then it is cut in accordance with the size and shape of Marble inlay article which is going to be prepare in Marble.There are semi-precious stones in next line which are slipped into grooves of marble. During the reign of Shah Jahan, valuables used in this craftwork are brought from through out the world from different cities of different countries . Amber brought from Myanmar , Turquoise from Tibet, Jade from Burma and Lapis-Lazuli from Afghanistan etc. These are the most common stones used in Parchinkari or Marble Inlay Art.The stones which are chosen for the designing are now cut into small and thin pieces or slices. These small pieces are hand carved machine sizes since then.The allowance artist keeps a small piece of stone in his left hand and brush it slowly-slowly and giving them a particular shape according to their designs .
Some times because of this hand -operating machine called hone , artisans hand got injured ,just because it is some kind of a very difficult art. Different artisans are responsible for making different patterns like some are making leaves, some are making petals of flowers ,some stems and some are making other patterns . The main lead for completing the whole design is given by the Master the Ustad (in Persian).He is responsible for conjuring and completing the whole design.While stones are carving in their sizes, the white marble is coated with paste of orange color Ochre powder.
Now the marble been dug to make spaces for setting stones. In this way the chisel spot were easily highlighted against the orange color background make it easy for the artisans to work upon it. Chisel work is done using chisels made up of iron and but their tips are made up of tempered steel.Now the semiprecious stones are ready, chiselling is done, the only thing is to establish stones. They are standing in a piece standing place using a special gum at one time. After the drying of this gum and the stone set , the finished piece is gently cleansed with sand pad so that any thick edges can be pulled out.
